This route trades the flat toll-road grind south of Bandung for a paved mountain corridor that most touring riders never find — geothermal steam vents at Kamojang, then a long climb through Samarang and Bayongbong into the tea country around Cikajang. It’s built for big bikes: smooth asphalt, consistent elevation gain, and corners that reward a Harley or an X-Max without ever tipping into technical terrain.

Day 1: Bandung to Cikajang via Kamojang Crater

You’ll leave Bandung heading southeast through Majalaya and into Ibun, where the road narrows and starts climbing in earnest. This stretch is the warm-up — steady curves, light traffic once you clear the Majalaya market area, and your first sight of the crater steam rising off the ridgeline ahead. Kawah Kamojang sits in Ibun district in the Bandung Regency, roughly 45 km southeast of Bandung by road through Majalaya and Ibun, and the geothermal field has been active since Dutch surveyors first drilled test wells there in the 1920s. It’s a working stop, not a resort — steam vents, sulfur smell, and a raw look at the volcanic plumbing running under this whole stretch of Java.

From Kamojang the route drops toward Samarang before climbing again through Bayongbong. This is where the road stops being transitional and starts being the reason you booked the trip — sustained switchbacks, cooler air, and tea terraces starting to show up on the hillsides in patches before they take over completely.

The day’s ride finishes in Cikajang, where the tea plantations stop being scenery on the side of the road and become the road’s whole reason for existing. Cikajang sits at roughly 1,266 meters elevation in the southern part of Garut Regency, ringed by Mount Papandayan, Mount Cikuray, Mount Puntang, and the Mandalagiri range, which is what keeps the climate noticeably cooler than Bandung even at midday. Riders should expect a jacket-weather finish to a day that started warm in Bandung. Overnight in the Cikajang area.

Day 2: Cikajang Back to Bandung

Day two retraces the same corridor in reverse — Cikajang through Bayongbong and Samarang, past Kamojang, then down through Ibun and Majalaya into Bandung. Riding the road backward changes it more than you’d expect: the descents that felt technical on the way up open into long, confident sweepers on the way down, and the tea terraces around Cikajang catch better light in the morning than they did on the previous afternoon. A relaxed pace gets you back into Bandung by early-to-mid afternoon, with room to stop wherever the group wants a longer look. What’s Included

As with every JavaRide trip, your motorcycle, gear, support vehicle, road captain, and mechanic are included — you just bring yourself.

Who This Route Fits

This is a good fit for touring riders who want real elevation change and corner work without leaving paved roads — comfortable on a cruiser or maxi-scooter in sustained curves, but not looking for gravel, river crossings, or technical sections. If you want to keep going past Cikajang into rougher terrain toward the south coast, the ADV version of this route continues further — see link below.
